龍山に怒るニューヨーク
DECEMBER 12, 2011 08:04２０１６年に龍山（ヨンサン）国際業務地区に建設される住商複合マンションのデザインが、９・１１テロで崩壊する直前に煙と炎に包まれた米ニューヨーク・マンハッタンのワールドトレードセンター（ＷＴＣ）に似ているという論議が米国で起きている。特に、設計者がＷＴＣ再開発のマスタープランを作成した人物であり、設計会社の広報が「（デザインで）９・１１テロを念頭に置いた」と述べたことが明らかになり、論議を増幅させている。
１０日、ニューヨークポストやニューヨークデイリーニュースによると、９・１１テロ犠牲者遺族らと米ブロガーは、ソウル龍山の国際業務地区に建つ住商複合マンションの２つの棟のデザインが、９・１１犠牲者を無視した処置だとして問題を提起した。
オランダの設計会社ＭＶＤＲＶが最近デザインを公開したこの建物は、６０階と５４階の２つのビルで、その中間部分の１０階が連結している。問題は、雲の形の連結部分。まるで飛行機がツインビルにぶつかった直後、煙と炎に覆われた状況を連想させるということだ。米国の電化製品などのブログメディア・ギズモードが８日、「設計士は一体何を考えているのか」と問題を提起し、ＭＶＤＲＶフェイスブックには、「設計士はアルカイダの追従者か」という非難が殺到した。ＭＶＤＲＶは、「脅迫メールや抗議の電話まで来ている」と明らかにした。
論議が広がると、ＭＶＤＲＶはウェブサイトに掲載した説明文で、「９・１１テロを連想させる意図は全くなく、設計の過程で両者に類似性があるという事実も認識していなかった。９・１１テロを連想させるという指摘に深く遺憾を示し、心を痛めた人々に心より謝罪する」としながらも、設計を変更する考えがないことを明らかにした。しかし、これに先立ち、同社の広報がオランダの現地メディアとのインタビューで、「設計者が９・１１テロのＷＴＣを念頭に置いたようだ」と明らかにした事実が、ニューヨークデイリーを通じて明らかになり、問題がさらに大きくなっている。
龍山国際業務地区を設計したダニエル・リベスキンド氏は世界的に有名な建築デザイナーで、ＷＴＣ再開発のマスタープランも作成した。米保守系の週刊誌ウィークリースタンダードは、「龍山国際業務地区はリベスキンドのマンハッタンマスタープランと非常に似ている」と報じた。
９・１１テロ犠牲者も強く反発している。９・１１で消防隊員の息子を失った元ニューヨーク消防署副所長のジム・リッチーズ氏は、ニューヨークデイリーとのインタビューで、「信じられない話だ。テロの犠牲者に対する最低限の配慮もない、限度を越えている。扇情的なデザインで有名になろうとしている」と憤った。
問題になった住商複合マンションは、龍山国際業務地区に建設されるランドマークとなる建物で、施行会社の龍山駅税権開発は、デザイン案を検討し、来年３月末までに最終案を確定する計画だ。雲の形の空間には、スカイラウンジ、プール、レストランなどの施設が入る。

同紙によると、9・11テロで消防士の息子を失ったジム・リッチスさん（元ニューヨーク消防署副所長）は「設計者にはテロの犠牲者に対する最低限の配慮もない。これは非常に安く名を売る方法だ」と語ったという。
騒動が巻き起こると、MVRDVはホームページに「世界貿易センターを形象化しようという意図は全くなく、デザインの過程でも世界貿易センターに類似しているという点には気づかなかった。だが、このデザインのせいで胸を痛めている全ての方々に謝罪する」という内容の謝罪文を掲載した。
MVRDVはまた、フェースブックを通じ「激怒した人々から『アルカイダの追従者』などと非難する電子メールや脅迫電話を受けている」と明らかにした。
竜山駅勢権開発株式会社の関係者は「海外での論争であって一部の憶測にすぎないため、これによって設計を変更する予定は全くない」と説明した。

よく見ると、「龍山」と「竜山」との表記の違いはいいとして、この両翻訳記事では開発会社への漢字の当て方が違っていますね。どっちが正解なんでしょうか…？

A mockup shows two soaring skyscrapers connected in the middle by a “pixelated cloud” that evoked the clouds of debris that erupted from the iconic World Trade Center towers after terrorists flew planes into them.
“What the hell were these architects thinking?” asked the headline on a Gizmodo article about the plans for the Seoul apartment buildings.
MVRDV, which is based in the Netherlands, insisted in a statement that it didn’t notice the uncanny similarity that struck many observers instantly.
“MVRDV regrets deeply any connotations The Cloud project evokes regarding 9/11,” it wrote on its website.
“It was not our intention to create an image resembling the attacks nor did we see the resemblance during the design process. We sincerely apologize to anyone whose feelings we have hurt.”
Jim Riches, a retired FDNY deputy chief whose son was killed on 9/11, said he didn’t believe the architects.
“I think it’s a total lie and they have no respect for the people who died that day,” he said. “They’re crossing a line.
“It looks just like the towers imploding,” he said. “I think they’re trying to sensationalize it. It’s a cheap way to get publicity.”
Despite their regrets, the architects did not indicate any plans to alter the design of the buildings — one 850 feet tall, the other 970 feet tall — which are expected to be finished by 2015.
In an ironic twist, the towers will be at the entrance of the Yongsan Dreamhub project, which was designed by Daniel Libeskind, who created the master plan of the rebuilt World Trade Center.

“A real media storm has started and we receive threatening emails and calls of angry people calling us Al Qaeda lovers or worse,” the firm MVRDV wrote on its Facebook page.
Below the comment, a fierce debate raged on whether the design for two apartment buildings in Seoul is too reminiscent of 9/11.
The architects claim it never crossed their mind that their project, dubbed The Cloud, bore any similarity to the World Trade Center after terrorists drove two planes into it.
Their critics say they must be blind and that the “pixelated” outcropping connects the two buildings looks just like the cloud of debris and fire that shot out of the Manhattan towers.
In addition, a Dutch newspaper quoted the firm’s spokesman as saying the designers had thought about the obvious parallels.
MVRDV apologized for causing anyone pain but could not be reached for comment on whether it was sorry enough to change the blueprints.
