マンチェスター・シティの「招き猫」が他界

藤井重隆●文 text by Fujii Shigetakaマンチェスター・シティが11日、クラブのペットとして 練習場で飼っていた雄猫のウインブリドン君（推定14歳）が他界したと発表した。クラブはその翌日、練習場にあるチームフラッグをすべて半旗にして、愛猫に弔意を示した。
ウインブリドン君は1999年にクラブ練習場の入り口でクラブスタッフに拾われ、以来公式ペットとして飼われていた。そのシーズン、3部リーグに所属していたマンCは、FA杯で当時1部のウインブルドンと対戦。当時コーチ陣にいたコロンビア出身のファン・カルロス・オソリオ氏が、対戦相手のウインブルドンを「ウインブリドン」とスペイン語なまりで発音したため、そこから名付けられたという。
それからというもの、この猫はクラブに福をもたらし続けた。1998−99シーズンに、クラブは3部リーグのプレイオフを勝ち抜き2部へ昇格。そして、その3年後には2部優勝を果たしてプレミアリーグに昇格。2003年にはホームスタジアムを現在のエティハド・スタジアムへ移転すると、その後マンCはふたりの富豪オーナーに買収されさらに発展を遂げた。
ちなみに、ウインブリドン君は他界するまでに練習場に生息していたネズミを約200匹駆除。約7000缶のキャットフードと100リットル以上の牛乳が、彼のためのクラブ経費として計上されていたという。
今シーズン、マンCはマヌエル・ペジェグリーニ体制となったが、数々の名選手や名監督をクラブに迎え入れてきた「幸運の招き猫」がいなくなった影響があるのかどうか。ファンやサポーターは、これまでと同様の、あるいはこれまで以上の好成績を願い続けている。

Having strolled in to the club's training complex 13 years ago, the white and ginger feline has seen it all at City, as the club have transformed from perennial top flight strugglers to Premier League title winners.

City have had six different managers since Wimblydon first arrived at the club, and it appears Kevin Keegan was his favourite after the cat left a present outside his office one day - a mouse.The tom cat, thought to have been a stray, was also the first animal to welcome striker Mario Balotelli to the club in 2010.

The cat's stats make for impressive reading as it's reckoned Wimblydon caught nearly 200 mice, drank more than 100 litres of milk and ate 7,000 sachets of food.
A statement on the official Manchester City Twitter feed read: “It is with great sadness that we announce that the Carrington Club Cat Wimblydon passed away this afternoon RIPWimbly.”
Hopefully City can have the purr-fect start to the season and claw the Premier League title back from Manchester United in honour of Wimblydon.
